Snorkel tours in Cabo Pulmo
Three stops in the aquarium of the world: a coral reef in 10 feet of water, a sea lion colony and a fish-packed point. Certified guides in the water, oxygen on the boat.
The Cabo Pulmo snorkel tour costs $1,600 MXN per person (plus the $120 MXN park fee) and visits Mermaid Beach reef, the sea lion colony at La Lobera and Las Navajas reef in about 2.5 to 3 hours. It is the only snorkel tour in Cabo Pulmo run by a PADI dive center, with certified guides on the boat, a trained captain and oxygen on board. Mask, snorkel, fins and life jacket are included. Tours leave in the morning from the dive center beach.
The route
Three stops, one morning
Mermaid Beach reef
Coral heads in 10 to 30 feet of water right off the beach. Turtles grazing, stingrays on the sand, clouds of sergeant majors and butterflyfish. The guide points out the eels hiding in the rock.
La Lobera, the sea lion colony
The rocky point where the colony hauls out. When the sea lions are in, the young ones come to play, spinning around snorkelers in the shallows. Surgeonfish and Moorish idols fill the gaps between boulders.
Las Navajas reef
A shallow reef finger with schools of grunts and snapper, parrotfish and, in the warm months, mobula rays passing in the blue beyond the drop-off.

Why here
Snorkeling inside a marine reserve
Cabo Pulmo is the only hard-coral reef on the Baja peninsula and, since fishing stopped in 1995, its fish biomass has multiplied several times over. For a snorkeler that means the action is in the first 15 feet: turtles, schools that part around you, rays on the sand and sea lions at the point. No motorized water sports or jet skis are allowed in the park, so the surface stays quiet.

Snorkel tour questions
How much is the snorkel tour in Cabo Pulmo?
The guided snorkel tour costs $1,600 MXN per person plus the $120 MXN marine park fee per person per day. Mask, snorkel, fins and life jacket are included; a wetsuit can be rented for $200 MXN.
Where does the snorkel tour go?
The boat visits three spots: the shallow coral reef off Mermaid Beach, the sea lion colony at La Lobera and Las Navajas reef. Stops are adjusted to the conditions of the day and the group.
Do I need to know how to swim?
You should be comfortable in the water. Everyone wears a life jacket, the guide stays with the group and the stops are shallow (10 to 30 feet of water), but there is no standing depth at the reef.
Is the snorkel tour good for children?
Yes. It is the most family-friendly activity in Cabo Pulmo. Children must be able to float with a life jacket and follow the guide. Snorkel vests in small sizes are available.
Can snorkelers and divers go on the same boat?
Snorkelers and divers use separate boats because the sites and timings differ. Families often split for the morning and meet for lunch at the Coral Reef Restaurant.
Are there jellyfish or other hazards?
The bay is protected from big waves, but small stinging jellyfish ("agua mala") drift through at times, especially in summer. A full wetsuit or rash guard takes care of it. Mosquitoes appear after rain, so bring repellent in late summer.
